2023 MAUI TROPICAL ADVENTURE

A photography tour and workshop on Hawaii’s most beautiful island

WEEK 1: MAY 6 - 12, 2023 ****SOLD OUT****

Is there anything better than sandy beaches, palm trees, crystal blue water and warm ocean breezes? Add in some spectacular photogenic scenery and I can’t think of a better place to stretch your photography skills than the island paradise of Maui. From the aforementioned stunning beaches, to the abundant honu (turtles), to the lush tropical rainforest teeming with waterfalls on the Road to Hana, the diversity of subjects on Hawaii’s second largest island is sure to keep us busy. On this 7 Day, 6 Nights Photography Vacation (yes, it’ll feel like a vacation) you will be guided to some of the most scenic locations on the island and provided with expert instruction on how to best capture the light and interesting compositions. The goal of the workshop is to give you the ability to explore, learn, and fine tune your photography skills both in the field as well in post processing development to bring your images to life.

ITINERARY

Participants should plan to arrive by midday on May 6 where you will be picked up from the Kahului Airport (OGG) and taken to our accommodations before gathering for a meet and greet and then heading out to shoot sunset. On day 2 we will journey on the Road to Hana and stay the night on this secluded and quietly beautiful part of the island. Making the journey on this winding and picturesque road through the tropical jungle will be a highlight of the week! Day 3 we will return to Kihei which will be our home base for the remainder of the trip which is central to many of the most beautiful beaches on Maui. Each day we will meet well before sunrise to get to the best possible locations to chase the morning light and continue shooting until the sun is too high and light too harsh. We will break each day in the mid morning, giving everyone an opportunity to eat and relax at the beach before heading out for sunset. Afternoons will also be the time dedicated for post processing instruction in both Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop for those that are interested. Dinners will typically be after our sunset session. One day we will have a snorkeling excursion to the Molokini Crater with it’s abundant marine life. The workshop will end after sunrise on May 12 giving people plenty of time to get to the airport and return home.

USEFUL INFO / PHYSICAL DIFFICULTY

The sun rises at approximately 6:00 am and sets at 6:45 pm during this time of the year in Maui. Add in driving time to and from locations and this will make for some early mornings. Temperatures can range from from a very comfortable 70’s during the day to 50’s at night.

Physical difficulty of the locations will be quite easy with one moderate hike to the Pipiwai Trail in Hana which has a gradual incline on our way to the bamboo forest and a beautiful waterfall. Most locations will be a short distance from a parking lot. It is important for participants to be in good physical health and sure on their feet as many shorelines have jagged lava rock.

AIRPORT / ACCOMMODATIONS / TRANSPORTATION INFO

Participants should fly into the Kahului Airport (OGG) by midday on Saturday May 6 where you will be picked up. All transportation and lodging is included in this workshop. For lodging arrangements you will have your own unit for the first two nights, and the rest of the time you will have a private single bedroom and bath in a shared unit at Kamaole Sands, a condo resort in Kihei directly across from the beach! Lodging is included for the nights of May 6 - 11, checking out the morning of May 12, the day that participants should plan to fly home. If you’d like to extend your stay, rental cars can be picked up right at the airport. Please contact us if you have any questions.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

A Hawaiian vacation with a photography twist. This is certainly the most relaxed photography workshop that I will offer. Yes we will be chasing the beautiful and colorful sunrises and sunsets that Maui is known for. But we will also be spending time doing what you’d expect on a tropical island; snorkeling and chill time at the beach! On this laid back photo tour we will do our very best to showcase the diversity of this island paradise and give you the opportunity to use every lens in your bag and your drone if you bring one. We will be getting wet, catching a bit of a tan, and creating portfolio images to be proud of. I will provide tips in the field to capture images correctly "in camera" with the goal being that part becomes second nature and students can then focus on the creative aspects of landscape and nature photography. Post processing instruction will run the gamut of importing and organizing files to processing images in Lightroom and Photoshop. I am an open book and willing to share any tips or tricks I’ve learned to help you turn your photos into art!
